Sex discrimination can have a serious impact on workplace opportunities, especially when it comes to promotions. It can hold people back based on their sex or gender, rather than their skills, performance or experience.

Here are some key points to consider. 

How sex discrimination affects career growth

In some workplaces, promotion decisions may be influenced by outdated gender stereotypes. A manager may assume that a woman with children is less committed to her role. A man might be favored because he is seen as more authoritative or better represents “leadership material.” These assumptions are not only unfair, but they can also block qualified employees from advancing in their careers.

Sex discrimination can also be subtle. For example, employees may be left out of key meetings, denied mentorship or not be informed about new opportunities. Over time, these actions limit their ability to be considered for higher-level roles.

Is this illegal?

In the United States, it is unlawful to base promotion decisions on sex or gender. The key federal law that prohibits this is Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This law applies to most employers with 15 or more employees. It makes it illegal to treat someone unfairly in any part of employment because of their sex.
