When does FMLA apply to a leave from work?

There are certain life circumstances and events that qualify for an approved absence from work under the protections of the Family and Medical Leave Act. While an employee is not required to be paid during this time, you are still insured.

Is my employer liable if I am harassed at work?

If you have been harassed at your place of employment by someone akin to a supervisor, your workplace has become hostile and you have irrefutable proof, you may wonder what will happen when you take action and whether or not your employer will be held liable. In many cases an employer will be held accountable by fines or other penalties.

Personal and professional effects of workplace discrimination

Most of us work hard to obtain gainful employment, build a successful career and take great pride in the work that we do. Often, how successful we are, or how content in our role with our employer we are, is in large part dependent on our actions and behaviors. Unfortunately, however, some circumstances are beyond our control that makes achieving these goals difficult, if not impossible. Workplace discrimination is a very real issue that affects numerous Americans.

Knowing your rights in a wrongful termination case

In most cases, employment relationships can be terminated by either party with little need for a valid reason. However, there are circumstances where it may be unlawful for employers to dismiss employees without just cause. One such example is when an employee feels they may have been terminated as a form of retaliation for refusing a particular direction given by the employer because the employee felt it was unethical or illegal to do so. In cases such as these, claims may be filed against the company. However, there are guidelines involved in filing these cases that the employee should be aware of.
