Statistics on disability discrimination

On Behalf of | Aug 26, 2021 | Workplace Discrimination

Whether you are currently experiencing discrimination as a result of your disability or your employer recently terminated your position unlawfully, it is crucial to stand up for your rights. Make sure you have confidence in your approach if you decide to file charges and have confidence knowing that you are not alone.

It is helpful to take a look at statistics on disability discrimination in order to understand how widespread these violations are. Regrettably, many hard-working people face financial and emotional challenges when their lives turn upside down because of employee rights violations.

Understanding the prevalence of disability discrimination

According to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the fiscal year 2020 saw more than 24,000 charges filed as a result of accusations involving disability discrimination. Moreover, it is important to note that this figure does not count charges filed at the local or state level. In the fiscal year 2020, allegations involving disability discrimination accounted for 36% of all discrimination charge receipts the EEOC received.

Disability discrimination and other types of discrimination cases

In comparison to other types of discrimination, a larger portion of discrimination cases involves disability discrimination in recent years. During the fiscal year 2019, disability discrimination accounted for 33% of charge receipts the EEOC received, compared to 30% in the fiscal year 2015, 25% in the fiscal year 2011 and 18% in 2001.

This is a concerning trend and highlights how pivotal it is for disabled workers to stand up for their rights. If you believe that you experienced any type of discrimination or unlawful treatment as a result of your disability, look into your options.
