The price of harassment

On Behalf of | Jun 12, 2016 | Sexual Harassment

There is a lot that goes on in a person’s spirit, mood and energy when they are subjected to harassment of any kind. But those reactions can be particularly pronounced when the harassment is sexual in nature. When you’re trying to do what is right, go to work, go to school, better yourself and better the world, it is offensive and devaluing to find yourself a victim of sexual harassment.

And yet, in recent news, a woman from Valparaiso put her foot down to such treatment and came up with a settlement from the university that hired the professors who harassed her.

The woman first received multiple offers from one of her professors at Purdue when she took classes to complete her graduate school program there during the 2014-2015 school year. She alleged that he came to class intoxicated and, nearly from the start, was making lewd comments toward her and would ask her and other students out to restaurants and bars.

Following this, the woman went on to fulfill a position as a teaching assistant for yet another professor, who upon preparation for her final lecture gave her a photo of himself completely nude.

Purdue University gave each man a chance to resign from their positions after the complaints were brought forth against them. The school also settled with the woman for $200,000, while stating that they acted as soon as they were made aware of the transgressions.

Should you ever find yourself in an uncomfortable situation where a person is taking advantage of their role as a teacher, manager or leader or is simply subjecting you to sexual innuendos, behavior or actions, you have recourse. An employee law attorney in Indiana can stand beside you and advocate for what is right.
