Equal Pay Act

Throughout the history of our economy, women have earned substantially less than men. Inequality in employment compensation is a form of sex discrimination. Fortunately, federal legislation strives to put an end to that inequality. Under the Equal Pay Act (EPA), men and women are entitled to equal pay for equal work.

The Equal Pay Act extends beyond just base salaries or hourly wages. It also requires equality in:

  • Bonuses
  • Commissions
  • Fringe benefits
  • Profit-sharing
  • Stock options

If inequality exists in any form of employee compensation, your employer can’t simply reduce everyone’s wages to eliminate the inequality. Nor can your employer retaliate against you for reporting unequal wages.

Enforcing your right to equal pay may involve filing claims under the EPA as well as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits employment discrimination. If successful, you may be entitled to a raise, back pay, attorney fees and other damages to compensate for your losses.

Your right to equal pay affects more than just your livelihood and financial stability. It’s also a matter of dignity and respect.
